/Marlborough Crescent is a compact yet highly efficient new-build home, thoughtfully positioned within a former garden plot in a residential area of Falmouth. Designed to maximise space and light on a tight, urban site, the house balances privacy with openness, creating a secluded retreat that feels both spacious and connected to its surroundings.
Our client’s aim was to create a modern single-storey, two-bedroom home that could serve as a periodic base in Falmouth while ensuring low running costs and a strong connection to the outdoors.
The L-shaped design maximises the available footprint while creating a sheltered, south-facing garden hidden from public view. Large openings and vaulted ceilings enhance the sense of space and light, while the carefully considered scale ensures the home complements the existing streetscape.

The project prioritises thermal efficiency and sustainability, integrating a high-performance building envelope with renewable energy systems to create a home that is both low-energy and comfortable year-round.
/ Twin stud wall construction for increased insulation thickness
/ Recycled newspaper insulation for enhanced thermal performance, low embodied carbon, and efficient installation
/ A continuous 60mm wood fibre insulation wrap to minimise thermal bridging, using natural, low-carbon materials
/ Triple-glazed windows for superior energy efficiency
/ Mechanical heat recovery ventilation system to maintain optimal indoor air quality in an urban setting, eliminating the need to open windows while reducing heat loss
/ Air source heat pump with underfloor heating throughout
/ Integrated solar panel array for on-site renewable energy generation
/ Solar shading on the southern elevation to prevent overheating during the summer months
By taking a fabric-first approach and considering every aspect of the build, 9 Marlborough Crescent delivers an exceptionally efficient, comfortable, and cost-effective home, making the most of its compact urban site.
